Default Automatic Renaming of Layers

Does anyone know how to get your computer to name layers in Photoshop with the product name instead of the generic "layer 1..."

I never thought I would post layouts, so I never kept accurate records of the products I used. BIG MISTAKE! Now that I am interested in posting, I would love it if the computer would do the work for me! If not, what do you all do to make this task easier?

I'd appreciate any help you can give.

BTW, I am using a MAC and Photoshop CS.

Thanks,
Jen

I wonder this same thing! When I used PSE 5.0 the name transfered over, but it doesn't with CS4.
Good question!

I have never had elements and with CS4 it doesn't rename the layer that I know of. Boy that would be nice!!! I just keep word open and type a list of my materials that I copy later.

I just go to File > File Info and type under "description" as I put each item into my layout...when I am finished, i review the list and delete the names of the items that I didn't end up using. Since i always save the PSDs, that information is always there with the document.
If you figure out how to get CS4 to auto name the layers let us know...that would be super if it could!

I rename each layer as I go. Think I learned that in one of Cassie's tutorials. Have done it ever since I started digi scrapping and it is like second nature now.

I do the same as Terry.....I rename each new layer with the name of the designer and kit. It's a pain.....I think I read somewhere that PSE 8 does transfer the file name over. It would be worth buying it if it did!

I do like Terry and Pam, type in the name to the layer as I go. I always think how nice it would be if the computer would do it for me.

I have PSE 8.0 and before that I had 5.0. If I pull the paper upwards from the bin into the layout, the name will appear in the layer. If I copy and paste it doesn't name it. This worked for me on my old PC and on my new Mac.

I simply leave the goodys I have used open and when I upload the lo I add it into my description - and close each item one by one.

Works for me.

Sounds like this is another handy feature that PSE has and Photoshop doesn't! lol!!
(The others I've discovered are the wow plastic layer styles for creating your own acrylics and the Create -> photo layout feature that automatically creates templates for you and allows you to choose from a range of frames etc)

The only way is to use the Place feature, but it creates a layer that you then need to rasterize. I prefer to make that extra step naming the layer my own way.

I've always used PSE and that's never happened for me. But, wow, if it works in PSE 8, I'll upgrade!!!

I do like Sam, leave the items open in the bin and then close them one by one and record the names. I don't type the descriptions into the layers as I create them because I keep adding and deleting papers and elements so much as I work on a layout. I never know until the end what will be in the final version of a page.

I rename the layers as I go and I keep the product list in File Info (first got that idea from Angie Wags).

Sarah
In PSE 4.0 when I save the layered file as a jpeg the same information in the file info window gets saved, too, so that even if I eventually delete the full layered copy I still have the list of products info in File info when I open the jpeg file the next time.

Good to know Merrilee, thanks. I have been lax on flattening and printing, so hadn't checked if the file info would still remain in JPG format.

I do this also. After I'm finished with the layout I copy and paste the link from the DD product spreadsheet as well. Then I just copy and paste the product info when I post.

I'm on of those who renames my layers. This has helped me more than once to find something easily when I want to use it for another page. It REALLY comes in handy when trying to make a book and have some consistency.

I just recently started checking out Picasa for my digi stuff and on a couple of LO's, I created an album in Picasa of my supplies I thought I would use. Then I can just review the items in my album and add to my supply list (I also like to keep them in file info).

I can add items to the album if I find other things and easy to delete items I didn't use after all. You can then just delete the album when you're done. Really helpful for creating a whole cohesive album of an event.

I would think those of you using ACDSee or some other organization program could use a similar feature.

Hi. Just want to echo what Readstomuch said about Photoshop Elements 8. I have it too, and it will "name" the layer for me with the product title. If I pull up from the bin into my layout, then the name appears as the new layer (ex. KPertiet_Flourished Page Masks No1-3). It is definitely a helpful feature of PSE8.

ETA: I bought PSE 8 on sale at Costco last month with an instore coupon the service desk gave me.
