Default Help!!

Several days ago I started loading my Alaska book into Shutterfly. I resized all my pages to 7.95 and was so excited about seeing how it turned out. I am using Katie's Create a Book Classic templates. THE PROBLEM is the when I go across the gutter with a design/photo they do not match. I have made sure that my design match on my jpgs. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Whenever I'm going across the gutter, I always use a 16X8 inch canvas. If I'm using templates, I copy the right-side template and duplicate all the layers onto the right side of my working canvas. Then I'm working on just one page, and everything will line up after I flatten the PSD and separate my two pages.

I apologize if you're already doing this and it's redundant information. As careful as I am on the screen, I have never been able to get two separate canvases to line up exactly when working with separate 8X8 (or 12X12) pages. The only way I ever had success was to work on the large canvas and separate at the end.

HTH!

Sarah

Thanks, Sarah!
I did a version of that with the center pieces that I am having problems with, but I think I'll try doing a whole LO that way and load it up and see what happens.

Sarah, you're always so quick to help us out in the forums, especially with Shutterfly questions. TY! I'm going to follow your advice next time for me, too, because I have had trouble getting the pages to line up perfectly across the 2 pages.

I hope you get it to work, Deanie! Your Alaska pages were so beautiful. Be sure to link us up when you get done at Shutterfly. I love to look at albums and see the familiar pages all together.

I would love to see it, too. I remember your pages---it will be great to see them in a book!

You know, I've never resized my pages. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. I'm sure you're keeping the proportions the same. I can't think of anything that would knock it off kilter. Are they "not matching" left-to-right, or top-to-bottom? It would make sense that they might not match left-to-right because if you resize the page, you're introducing some blank space in the gutter. But I'm not entirely sure.

Let us know if you get it worked out! I love two-page themes, especially with elements and photos moving across the gutter, and when I "figured out" the 24X12 workflow, I was so happy I couldn't stand myself.

Sarah, I still had no luck after making them on one canvas. It seems to me that one would have to figure out how to make your pages match after .25 in. of trim was taken off on the gutter side of each page. Anybody have any other ideas?? Katie...Pattie, the Shutterfly guru...

I don't know that there's a magic system... but I DO know that coming in 2010 is an option that allows for 2-page spreads with one image!

Deanie, I'm sorry---I don't know what could be wrong. I have always done my LOs across two pages, and they always look fine. I have no idea what could be causing the problem.

Sorry this isn't working easily Deanie. I never resize my pages when I make a book. As long as you don't have any important details in the margin my books have printed fine. Just a thought.

Fabulous news, Katie!! I'll find a work around this time. I've never resized mine before either, Sutterfly's drop in template resizes them to the full bleed size of whatever book you are buying. The trim size is smaller than the full bleed size so when you go across the gutter with say a photo of a mountain you loose almost a half inch in the middle. Needless to say they don't match up. So that's why Katie's news is so good!

So sorry you are having this trouble Deanie.

I had the hardest time last time I made an 8x8 so this time I made sure there was nothing within the 1/4 inch of the edge.

I just finished my book and I essentially did what Katrina did. I used one of Katie's template books, uploaded all of the pages as 12x12s, added them to the storyboard and shockingly I think it is ok.

There is the option as you are making the 12x12 photobook, to click, and make into a 8x8 book. Would that be worth trying?

Sometimes it can be so frustrating getting a book ready to print. Fortunately, it is worth it once you get it figured out and printed. Good luck!

Can I jump in here? I havent created a shutterfly book yet, actually, I'm being scared off, by all the confusing jargon...
Doris, are you saying that you create a layout with a blank 1/4inch on one side... I create my LO's in 12x12 but always crop down to 8x8 to print, I was thinking of maybe printing a 8x8, but not sure if I have to resize down to 7.95? this is getting too confusing for me now!

I have printed 12 8X8 books and 4 12X12 books and have never had a single problem. I think some folks make this too difficult! I make all my pages 12X12 and when I drop them into Shutterfly, it resizes to 8X8. Nothing is lost except I have to use the 8X8 template for the cover.

Leaving the edges empty just means you can have background paper and elements go all the way to the edge, but don't put journaling or important picture elements within 1/4" of the edge all the way around. When I do my gutters on my original 24X12, I use Grant's Tools (free action to create guide presets in PSE) and I set my guide lines at 11 3/4 and 12 1/4 inches. I know not to put anyone's face, any journaling, or any important details between those two guide lines because those will disappear in the gutter (binding).

Then I set lines at 1/4 on the top and 11 3/4 at the bottom, and 1/4 on the left and 23 3/4 on the right.

I save the pages and dump them into Shutterfly. They always line up perfectly, except that yes, you can't see what is down in the gutter (the binding) in the thicker 8X8 books. But that's not a problem, because I don't put important details or photo elements in there.

So when I use templates, particularly Anna's, I either resize everything so I have a 1/4" gutter all the way around, or I make sure I don't put faces on the outer edges.

It's really very simple, I don't know why it gets so convoluted when I try to explain it!

So the take-home value is: just don't put important things within 1/4" of the edge, and you should be fine!

HTH.

Hey Janet!
Sarah described it perfectly!
I'm afraid I was one of those people that resized everything and then the gutters were off etc.
This time I kept it very simple.
I opened Katie's template. Made my LO like usual in a 12x12 size. I kept journaling from the edges. I have had things cut off before because I put them too close to the edge. This time I just made sure nothing important was within 1/4 inch of the edge (I did not make borders on the page). Saved the lo. When all the los where done I flattened them into jpgs.
I uploaded them and then dropped them into the 12x12 book. I did no resizing. Now I haven't got the book yet...but so far so good!
Janet..I would love to see your Paris photos! Let me know when you do them and if you have more questions let me know!
HTH,
Doris

Thanks Doris, Sarah....
Im going to check out my pages, because Im thinking of revamping some them anyway.. the only problem I can foresee at the moment, is I use Lynns WornPageEdges on EVERY layout, which sounds like they wouldnt work on a book, as you wouldnt see the turned down corners etc would you? I cant seem to do a LO without them !!

Ha! That's great, Janet, because I do, too! What I've started doing is either using them knowing I'll only see a little bit peeking in here and there, or I've started doing a background paper that is full bleed, and then another contrasting paper on top of it a little more than 1/4" in from the edges, and that's the paper I use the worn edges on. I use her worn textures on every page. Worn edges, stitches, and a staple.
