Question How many fonts on a layout is too many?

I'm sure this has been discussed before but for some reason I can't find anything.

How many fonts is too many fonts on 1 page? I just uploaded a page that I used 3 different fonts on and I'm wondering if that is too many.

Thanks for any help!

I think it depends on the page... I have seen wonderful pages that use tons of different fonts. I think it is good to mix it up. If it looks a little busy to you then scale it back =)

I think you can get away with it if 1 font is the big title, 1 font is a subtitle and the journaling is the 3rd... otherwise, you risk it being too busy- but there's always an exception to that rule too

I generally believe with fonts that "less is more" - and try to keep it to one or two fonts. I feel too many fonts will quickly make the page too busy.

Using more fonts can be used as a design tool - and needs to be done smart for it to work, I feel.

But that's just my 2 cents. Or in my case, my 2 NIS.

Interesting to hear what people will have to say.

I ususally keep it to 2 myself unless you are using a font as a design element, like mixing them up in a title or so. I don't like it too busy myself. Sometimes you can use 2 for a title with 2 words and then another font for the journaling, if they are not too different. That's how I like it anyway, but then again everybody is different

I will paraphrase Cathy Zielske ...and say you don't want it to look like a Font Sneeze with fonts all over the place. I may go to three if I use a 3rd strictly for numbers but then look at one of Ali Edwards latest 10 Things Layered Template LT381294.jpg and see if this appeals to you. I'd say that's one way of using font as part of the actual design.

Personal style is ....very personal...so think of what you like, how your own home fits you and be comfortable with what you create. imho, there is no 'right or wrong'. Just my 2 cents. ;-)

When you put a lot of different fonts on, and it doesn't look good to YOU, then you've done too much LOL

I can't think there could be a limit on the fonts used! It's all how it looks when it's finished..sometimes the fonts are a wonderful part of the design as a whole and it's very pleasing to the eye..other times, it can look like a total mess!

Maureen, that is a great "quote" from Cathy! I have never heard this one and think it is a "hoot" ... and sooo true too.

Sometimes though-it is fun to mix up the fonts in the journaling and that can really make the page pop- But, when I use fonts I really try to make sure they flow together- so if my title has one font, I try to have my journaling font match- or I use the same one. So, I have to agree it all depends upon the page and how you are using the fonts as part of the design

I think it depends on the layout. I've changed over the years and usually like to stick to just one or two with more simple layouts. Some fun layouts use fonts as part of the design or message, then the eye becomes the judge.

Some of the best graphic designers got to be where they are by breaking the rules, so go experiment and have fun!
