Lost Photos - Any Ideas??

I just went looking for some photos I knew I had, but i cant find them anywhere. I know I downloaded them into lightroom, processed them and exported as jpegs, then made a scrapbooking page with some of them, but now I cant find them anywhere. I dont have them in my lightroom catalouge, i dont have the exported jpegs, nothing. The only thing I do have is the half finished page as a psd file. So I know I wasnt dreaming, the photos exsisted! I also deleted them from my camera, of course! I've cheked my backup drive too and there not on it either.

Does anyone have any idea what might have happened??

Hmm, i found the jepgs now on my backup, they were there afterall, but still not in my lightroom.... hmmmmm...

I have had a few things magically disappear from Lightroom - they are still in my main photo file - but I still have no idea how that happened!!

I kinda know... there is a way of opening LR with a new catalog. and then you end up with some photos in that catalog and some in your 'usual' catalog.
I have done this twice now, and STILL dont quite know how I do it!! If you go into LR via finder - or windows version- you can find them. I bet this is whats happened.
I tell you, LR is so VERY adobe - you know, with quirks and crazy things happening for no reason!
