Default OMG - what happened ?

I know that on my EHD today I had all my favourite scrap stuff - 6 hours ago. Then I shut down the computer with my EHD, went home and opened my PC a little while ago. And now all files in that one folder is gone. Everything else is there.

So where have it disappeared. I have tried to search for folders I knew was there but nothing comes up. Have restarted the computer.

But the strangest thing is that the size of usage on the EHD indicates to me that the files is still there.

Any idea of how I can find the files ??

Are you on a Mac or Windows?

Do you know the file name of any of the files that were in the folder? If you do, try doing a search for that and then look at what the destination of that file is and see if they are all in the same location. May have accidentally gotten moved to be within a different folder or place on your drive... click & drag can be your friend or enemy at times.

I use windows - and I know a lot of part of the file names like the designer names and some of the products name - but nothing comes up - the first thought was that it had beed dragged somewhere wrong. But it doesn't appear in my searches.

grrr. and I who was just in the process of backing up all in that file because I had reorganized on moved things there - but not gotten as far as this folder.

Do you know how to do a search on a partial name? You can use * as a wildcard to fill in for parts you don't know.

For example) KPertiet_*.png would bring up all of my files that begin with KPertiet_ and ends in .png

Was you EHD connected to a different computer before you went home? Could they have gotten moved over to that computer by accident? or possibly sitting in the trash bin on the computer?

Fingers crossed that you find them.

have tried the suggested searches Heather, but it didn't help.

No the computer was only connected to this one - but I was another user. I have access to all HD's on the computer but still no luck.

In a desperate hope now I found out to try a recover files program (remember they suggested that to the one having deleted her camera disc)... it has found 313 files so far... but nothing of teh ones I miss

You say you were logged in as another user? Have you tried logging back in as that user?

User accounts are set up with permissions so the files may be exactly where you think they should be but because you are logged in as another user, don't have permission to see them.

I was just scrolling down to suggest that Heather! Happens at school ALL the time. A teacher comes to me frantic because "all of her documents are gone" and then when I visit the classroom I find that another user is logged on to her computer.

Fingers crossed that this solves the problem for our friend here!

Gosh, so mysterious! I guess you checked in the trash can. And you couldn't have confused your hard drive with a different one? A search would have found the files if you accidentally renamed the folder or dragged it into another folder.
I can't think of anything sensible to suggest.
I have my fingers crossed for you!

I'm not sure if this will help, but if I have one of my many ehd plugged into my macbook, and using the finder looking for, say one of katie's kits, it's not searchable by using a name in the file. Although if I know what the full file's name is and I look for it alphabetically, it IS there...it's just that finder can't find it.
I called apple on it and they said they are aware that for some reason, finder can't perform searches on ehds!
hope that helps and made sense.....

Hoping to hear good news when I get back tonight!!

btw, mommydawn, an inability to search EHDs sucks! If I have all of my 'stuff' there I want to be able to search it. hmmm...I may go into the Apple store and query the Genius/s there to see if there is any way round this. I was going to buy an ehd this week for my photos.

did you check inside all the other file folders on your EHD to see if that part. folder got moved into one of those? That has happened to me. This is so frustrating I am sure!

Today I am happy as a lark , while yesterday really frustrated.

This morning I did some google searches and found a program called File Scavenger, so I dl'ed a demo. After just 3 minutes search files started popping up with a message that my EHD have several bad sectors - and this is probably why my files suddenly was gone.

So now I am using the File Scavenger program to restore the favourite folder and my files pops up one after another on my MyBook EHD (don't dare to put it on the other , and I believe I can get all the most important files back *happy dance*

Yay! Bad sectors, hey?! It will certainly be worth the effort retrieving the data. I couldn't bear the thought of having to start from scratch!
