Well it turns out to be an almost happy ending - I have gotten a lot of my stuff back, but there are bad sectors that prevent me to of course getting my favourites of my favourites - but not given up.
I have a coworker that loves a challenge when HD's have some fault so he was going to look around tonight to see if he can find some tools that we can use at work tomorrow to see if we can fix it
