Yes, I've tried that, and it doesn't work because the casewrap (where they wrap the paper over the cover) doesn't translate to an exact ratio, I don't think.
So when I do an 8X8 book, I use the 12X12 layouts and they work great, but for the front and back cover and spine, I use Shutterfly's digital scrapbook templates. Shutterfly | Print Your Digital Scrapbook | Design Specs and Templates Go to that link and scroll down to 8X8, download their templates and use their cover templates. It will have a blue guideline that will show you where the paper will fold, but give yourself another 1/2" inside the blue line. If you put something right against the guideline, it will be folded over on the cover. Also, it's counterintuitive, but you don't want to center edge to edge, you want to center edge to blue guideline, since that's what will be showing. The 8X8 covers are actually something like 9.7 X 8.8 inches, to account for the wrap of the paper. Does that help? Sarah

I always use the template for the covers and the spine.
