Default SA Crop - taking laptop?

For those of you going to the SA crop, who is taking their laptop & who is going solo with camera in hand leaving the scrapping for once you get back home?

Trying to decide between taking the laptop along or packing light and carefree with just camera & smile in hand.

Never been to a crop of any kind so not really sure what to expect or plan for.

I'll be in Salt Lake, not SA, but I am definitely taking my laptop! I expect there will be challenges and much sharing of what gets created.

Oooo, Heather.... I know I don't need the hassle, but I'm seriously considering bringing mine. I mean, it's a digital crop after all.... we'll see how the packing goes.

Oh guys, definitely bring your laptops! That's what it's all about! There are going to be challenges I'm sure, kind of like the all day crops here. You'll have so much fun! You need to suffer carrying it all Heather

I am for sure bringing mine. Not sure if I have been anywhere in the last four years or so and not brought my laptop. It's sort of attached to the hip. : )

Being a digi crop you WILL need your laptop. We will be handing out CD's with products on them that included challenge materials. The crops go from 3 - midnight, so that might be a long time without one...

Okies, looks like I have some work to do then as my laptop hasn't been used to scrap on since I first began and has no supplies on it or program yet

Hmmm... go with an old copy of PSE or uninstall/move my copy of CS4.... decisions... uggg... what do others do when they go from their main machine to a laptop?

Doh, just dawned on me... load it with a 30day trial

Heather, Adobe's CS4 license allows you to install on two machines ... they assume you have the need for a portable machine too. Unless you have activated your license on more than one desktop you should have no problem installing it on your laptop too.

(And if you've already activated it on two desktops...just consider me a Buttinsky and ignore me completely!) LOL!

The longest I have been without my Macbookpro since I bought it a year and a half ago was last weekend....for 24 hours. I'm bringing it.

ETA: O, I lied. I took a PC Netbook to England. And will NOT do that again!

Now IF I had been going....... (pout-pout) - I would not be seen without my laptop or my camera. I'd rather go naked. OK, I am allowed to say that, since I am not going.

Did you hear this loud and clear Heather???? Take your laptop.

Hehe, thanks Aino, I hear loud and clear I used to take it everywhere but since Mike and I have been doing our monthly getaways, we have gotten used to our leave electronics at home and make it KISS (keep it simple stupid) trips.

THANKS!! Pattie. I was under the assumption (see.. I prove what you are when you assume) that the license was only 1 computer so only have it on the one machine. I will try putting it on my laptop - just finishing up cleaning OFF the laptop so it has some room for anything... it's bad when the memory cards for the camera have more room than the laptop harddrive does...

Guess I'll be bringing hubby's humongous new pc laptop but I just ordered a small le cie EHD from Amazon just for DD "stuff" and some photos. I'll be traveling like a gypsy across I-80 to SLC. Maybe I should head to SA first Fri. then drive an all nighter to SLC and just take it all in. Hum... maybe I should

I travel with my laptop all the time. Just take the laptop out of it's case and put it in a separate tub at security. Never check it. And during the flight my laptop bag goes under the seat in front of me.

Thanks, Randy ... sounds easy enough. Of course, the toddler I'll be juggling on my hip & lap will complicate matters, but that's another story...

Pattie I'm quoting you, 'cause I THINK... (NOT assume... have to check) but some programs you ALLOWED to put on up to 5 PCs... as long as they all under your name... not sure though... like I said... but Photoshop one of them...

It's really NOT a problem, but you"ll have to remove it out of the bag at security check... I fly with mine all the time too...

Current US regulations say you can leave your computer in a protective sleeve for the scan. Some places still make you take it out. Prepare to be a good, placid traveler - at least at the security check site. Attitude helps ( meaning NO attitude) ....unless you happened to get a randomly identified ticket for a full search. Then, no attitude REALLY matters!

I traveled with a 10 month old and three year old. I had everything (including the laptop) in a backpack. I just slipped it out, put it in the tub, etc... it was easy. I did that one-handed, AND folded the stroller with one hand and put it on the belt as well LOL Super Woman!!! ha ha ha.

Kristin some extra tips for security

1.) put all change, keys, anything metal into a bag you will stick through the scanners at the security check so you don't need to worry about it when you go through - travel with empty pockets

2.) don't wear metal hairclips or belts with buckles as some of them can set off the scanners and then you have an extra step of having to step into the big whirlygid thing for a more thorough scan.. last trip, one of those tiny little epoxy clippies holding my bangs back triggered the regular scanner and I had to step up into the big thing for a full scan

3.) wear easy to remove/put back on shoes for both you and Dani - you will need to take them off and put into a bin to go through the scanner

4.) have any liquids or gels in 3oz or smaller bottles (the bottle size counts not how full the bottle is) & all of them in a single 1-quart clear plastic ziplock bag that you can take out and stick in a bin easily

5.) make sure your camera and laptop batteries have charge in case they ask you to turn it on - don't usually anymore but never know when they might - they just want to see that they are working

So you get to the security check, have your id and boarding pass in hand to show them, you put your shoes in a bin, your laptop in a bin, your 1-quart plastic ziplock in a bin, your other bags through the belt scanner, you have empty pockets & no metal on you, you walk through praying not to set off the metal detector, wait for your stuff to come out - wait some more if they have to check something, then collect everything and put yourself and your bags back together and continue to the gate. Being prepared before you get to the scanner helps you as they tend to be in a friendlier mood if you aren't holding anything up.

Get to SA and have fun!

I was just thinking a backpack might be the ticket... maybe with some sort of cushion for the computer??? Now... to go dig through the kids' rooms in search of a suitable pack...

Thanks for the tip!!
