It depends on the photo. If you have sky and trees next to the house you can use the clone tool to copy part of the sky and trees over the top of the house. If you type "clone" into the help in Photoshop you should get some quite good instructions.

I think in the case of the extra person in the photo, you would need to extract your daughter from the image and just do something creative with the extraction. If you don't have a solid background (like a sky), it's very difficult to effectively clone out another person in an image.

Here is a page I did with an extraction. There was a LOT of background mess since this was a Christmas morning photo, and I just wanted to focus on the image of my son, not the wads of paper all over the floor.

Cassie, I love what you did with the extraction. Is the shadow (for your son) done using the same technique covered in the bending shadows tut, or is there a different one that covers it?

Thanks so much for the compliment. The extraction and shadow techniques for that page are the same as those in the tutorial Laying It All Out No. 4: Extractions with Dimension.

They do the cut out (extraction) by a process Cassie teaches in her LIAO No. 4 Extractions with Dimensions. And her LIAO No. 3 Custom Stickers and Clever Layering teaches how to do the look of him coming out of the shape by weaving him around the shape.

Cassie, that page & extraction are amazing!
American Girl, that cut-out is what Cassie was calling the "extraction" -- but it's actully not as simple as clicking a button in Photoshop. You can use the magic wand too to select pixels, then go into masking mode / select brush / fine tune the selection, then go back to regular mode and see if you like it. There are also MANY other ways to do extractions, but they are all multi-step processes that require much time & tinkering.

You can find some of Cassie's tutorials for sale here on the site where she describes how to do a lot of cool stuff. But if you are a true beginner, you may want to buy a Photoshop book too. Also, try searching for "how to do extractions in Photoshop" in Google and you will find lots of free tuts & even video tutorials that give you basic instructions on how to do extractions.

To make someone "fit inside" a letter, you can often erase the part of the letter that is supposed to be "behind" the person.

good luck & have patience...Photoshop is so awesome once you get going on the tutorials!

I second using Cassie's tutorials...all skills are easily reproducible using her information. She goes through each lesson step by step. You'll be amazed at how much it adds to your Photoshop knowledge!

P.s. That extraction is faulous!!

If you google "clone photoshop tutorial" or "extract photoshop tutorial" you'll find heaps of online resources. But none as good as Cassie's tutorials. From her tutorials you learn heaps of extra tips and shortcuts. And you get bonus papers and elements to work with.
