Default Trimming your Layouts

I thought it was cool when I read it in the email newsletter and I have been doing it ever since. . . it's the Trim the Bloat tip of the week.

Well, tonight I decided to test it out to see how much of a difference it really makes as I've recently had to buy a new EHD to save space on my internal (which kept giving me nasty messages about being full) . . . OMGosh! Trimming ONE finished page saved me 10MB! It makes me want to go through all my other layouts and trim them, too. Maybe another day. . .

Here's to another wonderful tip from DD!

Just trimmed my 365 page and saved 9.2MB on that one, too. I'm sold on this step being a must.

I've also been doing that Kelly since Katie pointed it out. I never stopped to look at how much waste I had, and it's amazing isn't it?

Oh, wow... I had no idea that "extra stuff" actually took up space. Who knew? (Geez... where have I been? ) Thanks for pointing this out (again!), Kelly!

I have been meaning to do this but have been putting it off. I guess it's time to go back over all the pages, because they do take up a lot of space. Thanks so much Kelly, I am so glad you reposted this!

Bump!

I am currently going through and proofing my 365 pages (the first half of the year!) and I decided to merge unnecessary layers, then trim the LOs down.

In 10 pages, I have trimmed approximately 2 GB of extra junk. 2 GB!?! I had NO idea there was so much hanging around that I couldn't see.

Great tip! The average size of a 24X12 layout went from 600MB down to 350MB.

I'm with Aino-wish I could trim my middle as easily as we trim the LO's! Sarah, for 2 GB's I think I'll have to go trim my pages.

cool idea! Thanx for sharing. And I know what you mean about the nasty messages...my computer seems to think that it does NOT have limitless memory for me! I had to go through and clear out a bunch of older files and old raw files that I don't need...I'd even filled up the backup drive...yikes!

I have loved this tip from the time it was posted; I had absolutely no idea about it before. Now I look in my pictures folder as I save my trimmed file and voila! the new reduced size comes up. Makes me feel like I saved lots of money at the grocery store with coupons lol!

Amy, it's such a great tip, that's why I bumped it back up again on the forum---some recent-comers may not have heard it the first time around! But then with 1 TB EHDs running right at $100, storage space is quickly becoming a non-issue! I remember when I had to pay $2/GB for memory. Technology is frenetic and frankly, at times, it's a little creepy when I think about what they can do with this stuff!

THanks for sharing the numbers with us, Kelly. I better start doing that, too, because my computer is also sending "nasty messages" to me about not having any more space.

When I'm filing my psd pages away that little box always pops up telling me how many MB the layout is. My latest art journal page was 359!!! Well, I can't have that. I opened the page and started looking for a way to cut back without loosing my elements and paper layers.
First I trimmed the whole page. . . this saved me 50MB. Next I combined my text words. . . this didn't do much. After that, I trimmed the papers that were clipped to the elements. . . THAT made a difference. My page is now 147MB! Every little bit helps. :O)

That's a big difference. I do the trim the bloat thing but don't consider it too much after that. I must pay more attention.

Well done! Those art journal pages do get big quickly, don't they!

It's hard to get a balance between saving space and clipping/trimming/merging so much that it'd be a pain to change if required. I like mine to end up below about 200Mb if possible.
