Default New Blank File in PSE6

Is there a way to lock the measurements in the new file dialog box, so that I get a 12x12 inch, 300 dpi file every time I open this?
It's aggravating to have to change this every time.

Not that I've ever seen. Sorry.

Another thing to love about PS. You can save presets of any size you like and select them from a drop down menu when you create a new page.

It amazes me that there are so many variations on techniques, programs and OS. Lucky for all of us that we have clever folks who can figure these things out.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to change the default values? I can't figure out a way to do that, but you can create a custom preset in Photoshop Elements. That saves you a few steps. Here's how:

Open PSE.
Select File > New > Blank File. (PC: Ctrl + N) (Mac: Cmd + N)
From the Preset drop-down menu, select "Custom."
Type a name in the "Name" box.
Select the width/height/resolution/color mode and background contents.
Click OK.
This saves your preset.

The next time you want to create a page with those dimensions/specs, all you have to do is select File > New > Blank File (or Ctrl + N / Mac: Cmd + N) and select the preset you created from the Preset drop-down menu. Click OK and your new document appears in the editing window.

I've created one called "Scrapbooking" which is a 12x12-inch page at 300 ppi, RGB color mode and white background. I just select Scrapbooking from the drop-down now. It saves a bit of time and I find it less annoying than typing everything in every time ;-)

Disclaimer: I am on a PC - I'm just assuming that you can follow the same steps on a Mac.

Sara, you got me all excited there. I went and tried your steps. I never thought to try typing a name for the Preset in the name field since that is where you type the name for your file. I did, and clicked OK. Then I went to File > New > Blank File again, and by golly there was "12x12 layout" in my preset options. HOWEVER, I closed PSE, opened it again, and the option was no longer there.

I'm wondering if this is just a Mac thing, or is yours there every time you launch PSE?

I'd love to know. I've always thought this was just an option in PS, since it has the "Save Preset" button in that dialog box and PSE does not.

LMK!

Cassie,

Mine is there every time I open PSE.
It lives at the bottom of the 2nd section of the drop-down menu under US Paper, International paper, Photo and then Scrapbooking (my custom one.)
I just set it up one time and when I clicked OK it saved it to PSE so that it's there no matter how many times I shut down and open again.

In the PC version, if you choose a preset other than custom and give it a name, it doesn't save it after you shut down/ start again. It just gives your new document a name in the title bar and for saving purposes.
But if you select "Custom" and give it a name, it creates a custom preset for you.

It's too bad if it doesn't work in Mac. I know that there are some differences in the way the software behaves on PC and Mac, though.

Darn. . . I was excited, but like Cassie my preset was no longer there when I closed PSE and reopened it. If anyone knows what step us mac people need to make it stick let us know. :O)

You're all so awesome! I'm reading your replies at work, but I can't wait to get home and try this.
