Default Paper magazines

During the chat yesterday somebody (sorry, I really can't remember who it was) mentioned that she cancelled all her subscriptions to scrapbooking magazines. That really made me wonder as to how many people still get them. It surprised me at first when she said that and that she doesn't get much inspiration from them. But then I realized that I don't really either! Not that the LOs aren't pretty and all, but something Janet (Jalong) said once was that she got into digi scrapping to be able to do things she couldn't do with paper and that really struck me. The pages that always jumped out at me were the ones that had something different, lots of flourishes or extractions or other stuff that would be hard to do with paper (of course for me just adding stitching is more than I could do on paper)
Anyway, to make a long ramble short, are any of you giving up your magazines? I still get mine and just renewed and will continue to do so, even if it's just to give them support, but truthfully my inspiration comes from pages I see here and at some other galleries. (and I am not just saying that)

I love artistic type magazines! I am not a subscriber, but, I regularly purchase every issue of Somerset Studio's Memories

I also recently purchased:
artists' cafe'{Best of Somerset Studio Art and Design}
Somerset digital studio
Somerset Studio Artful Blogging (lots of eye candy!)

I purchase any of the scrap magazines that relate to digital when I see them or I order from Ideabooks4U issues like Creating Keepsakes Computer Tricks for Scrapbooking.

Oh, and, did I mention, I love to own books about digital scrapping and photography! It's an addiction, actually! (I think there are probably many of us in the same category with me! )

I get Creating Keepsakes & Memory Makers by subscription. Then I buy the occasional other one here & there.

I get Creating Keepsakes, had just started subscribing when I found digiscrapping. Think I'll keep going with it, it's not so much the LOs I get inspired by, it's the home decor/projects I like. But then, I do still also paper-scrap.

Think I find a new hobby when I subscribe though, I'd just subscribed to a cross-stitch mag and had received about 2 issues when I discovered scrapping and haven't done any cross-stitch since!

I still subscribe to Creating Keepsakes and Scrapbooks, Etc. but don't plan to renew because, as you said, Anke, I get most of my inspiration right here in the DD gallery. I like looking through them, but I don't really go back to scraplift the layouts I see there.

I still subscribe to Creating Keepsakes. I just like to look at magazines for inspiration, just the way my brain works I guess. But since I am so into digi scrapping now I just mainly get design ideas from them. Plus almost every month I "know" someone who is published in there and I think that is too cool!

Thumbs up

Digigrandma mentioned Stampington and Co. Somerset Studio ..that is one amazing magazine with some of the most beautiful eye candy you could imagine! Just got the most recent issue and there was tons of color inspiration! Dina Wakely had a piece in it..she teaches the Art Journaling at Get It Scrapped (Debbie Hodges site)

She has alot of really good classes there besides the Art Journaling...am kind of stuck on the Art Journaling..fun to get your hands dirty..and it really is great for my mental health..LOL! I get so relaxed!

I don't subscribe *yet but buy it each time it comes out now. It really does tickle the senses...just wonderful!

those magazines look awesome, I was referring more to the traditional scrapbooking magazines, like MM and CK and Scrapbooks Etc. I guess there is a lot of stuff out there I didn't even know about

I still paper scrap also, but have not renewed any of my mags. I like to look at the LO's on-line and glean just as much from that as from a mag. And quite frankly, it's a budget issue. If I spend my $ on the sub, then that's less I have for paper and digi products that I love SOOOO much more because I get to create then

I buy Somerset and other Stampington Magazines plus a few other other art type because I like to do collage and altered pages with paint and sewing, but I don't buy or subscribe to any scrapbook mags. The layouts on my large screen are so lovely and the tiny mag prints don't compare.

The one thing that I get from the magazine I subscribe to (CK) that I don't get elsewhere is the sketch and variations. I love Becky's 2 page sketches and the variations on them. The closest we have here is the scraplift challenge and it's not quite the same.

I have MM and really don't care for it anymore. I am letting it expire. I get so much more inspiration from the gallery here.

I am crushed that there will be no more Simple Scrapbooks. I still buy/subscribe to CK and BHG Scrapbooks Etc and LOVE Stampington's Memories. There's something about curling up with these in bed or when I'm eating out alone that makes them still indispensable despite all the inspiration available on the internet. And I always read all the journaling, even when I have to use a magnifying glass to do so.

Anke, I just got my new Simple Scrapbooking- am I can not find any digi layouts in there! I love looking and will still continue, but with all the other mags folding wouldn't you think they would add a bit more digi content? I don't think I like the all paper trend I have been seeing...

I have been getting CK for about 4 years and have actually made the choice to not continue. I am sad to see DSM not in publication anymore.

I won't be one who will cancel my subscriptions to Memory Makers, Creating Keepsakes or Scrapbooks, Etc. I LOVE each of them and do find inspiration and "bits of learning" in each issue. They are fun to look at, fun to travel with, and I still get a thrill when I see one of them in my mailbox!

I would have kept my subs to Simple and Digital Scrapbooking too had they not folded.

Edited to say: And, the biggest plus for me is the fun that I have looking for DD products & DD friends layouts that are in each of these magazines in amazing regularity! I just feel as though I know lots of important people in the digi world when I study my magazines. And, can I add that I am somewhat addicted to magazines about photography, computers and scrapbooking.

I have to say I understand what you are saying. Receiving my mags in the mail always makes me feel happy too. Usually there are little things that I can apply and seeing familiar names is a thrill for sure. I just wish they had some digital sections too I guess.

I currently get CK magazine and I sort of drifted into a "I GUESS I'll renew it" thing.

I get most of my inspiration from this gallery and a few others that I visit less frequently than dd on-line. My enjoyment of the scrapbook paper mags is very lukewarm these days.

I find that a lot pages they show look (to ME) too "crowded" with what I consider frilly extra junk that completely overshadows the photos, or just don't seem to have a good "flow" to them. And since I never EVER do the crafts or hybrid things, I tend to breeze right past those articles (even if the things they make are very cute.) But then an issue will come where I find pages that I say "hmmmm...nice!" and rip out to save in my file. So overall it's still worthwhile for me to get the mag.

I used to get more inspiration there, though. I'm not sure if the mag changed, I changed, or 50% of each.

I guess the problem is that just not enough layouts are shown! I mean, you can come HERE and see dozens of new layouts DAILY. In that mag, they have such a limited amount of LO's and just too many WORDS. I honestly think they need to have articles called "all about cool LO's" and just publish a hundred new layouts! Obvioulsy that would be hard to pay for at their current pay rates, but I'm sure they could work something out. Maybe you could get $10 or $15 to have a small pic of your LO published in the "LO" article. Then I'd love to get it a lot more!

Anyway, just my gripes! But yes, paper mags are no longer as exciting. Although they do work really well for bathroom reading, and although I love to read them over coffee when they come new and fresh and shiny in the mail! If only the content in them were more exciting!

Jennifer, your comments are thought-provoking. Good job on the magazine analysis. I learned today that CK Media (publisher of CK magazine) is probably going to be pushed into bankruptcy by its creditors. Just not enough advertising revenue, probably a response to several factors including the softening of the scrapbook industry and the recession in general. But there you have it: possibly there won't even be a CK any more.

I have to admit that when I did subscribe to the traditional sb magazines, I basically looked to see who had their work published---lol. I usually only look at a magazine once, so I won't be subscribing to anything anymore. I might pick up a specialty book or issue every once in awhile though.

I dont subscribe to any mags but often pick them up at the bookstore. All this makes me wonder how many other magazines are going under, for other hobbies and themes. Just seems like magazines in general just can't survive. Sad.

I agree with Bailey. I am wary of buying a subscription now for most magazines, because I wonder how they can possibly continue printing them when they offer the subscriptions at such a low price. I can get so much inspiration here in the gallery as well as instruction in the challenges and chats. The internet has so much to offer in all areas that I wonder how long many magazines can survive.

print media is going under at an alarming pace. i only subscribed to two scrapping mags, and both of them just went under. really, there's so much online to look at and get inspiration from, magazines are becoming a bit superfluous. but, i have to say that i'm one of those persons who likes to have the book in my HAND.

oh, I'd be very sad if CK went under! Despite my gripes about it, I don't want it to go AWAY! That's terrible. I hate the idea that all the paper scrapbooking mags are disappearing. Geez. But at long as DD stays here, I'm good...

I find something really comforting in sitting down in a comfortable chair and reading my scrapbooking magazines (the one's the haven't gone under) and I get good ideas to try with digi scrapping. However, most of my inspiration does come from DD's gallerie's and challenges.

I wanted to add something here about CK Media's financial troubles ... apparently they have not been paying contributors for the past six months or so. This has hit bigger names like Simple Gals Lisa Dickinson, Tina Cockburn and Emilie Ahern, as well as amateurs like me for my first publication in the Nov/Dec SS issue. The three names I listed have been talking on the Studio Calico message board about this. And this blog can give you more details about CK Media: http://www.scrapbookupdate.com/scrapnancy/. Just a caution for anyone submitting work: don't expect payment!
