Patricia, just go to Firefox > Preferences and click on tabs. Set your preferences there.
That being said, sometimes you still need to hold the Apple/Command key when you click to create a new tab. That's because . . . according to Firefox: "Note: If you have chosen to open pages in new tabs, Firefox will ignore this optionpreference and will open a new window from a link if the page author specified that the new window should have a specific size, because some pages can only be displayed correctly at a specific size." That's why it works sometimes and not others. I just have a habit of always holding the Cmd key when I click (Firefox AND Safari) to create a new tab.
