Layers ? on "merging" on templates

I am using Ali's calendar templates for my 365 photo challenge. I use PSE 6.

After I have used the Cmd+G to "glue" my photo under the date box, should I "merge down", "merge visible" or something?
I learned my lesson, I did a flatten, and realized that was not a good, so I started over.

Wondering what the best technique is, after getting the photo positioned in the right place....just unsure of what the proper thing to do is.

when I am all done with a layout - I merge layers - but I then save it as a jpeg, and leave my psd file with all the layers in a seperate file.

I don't do anything after I group the layers, I leave it just like it is. That way, if I want to move things around at the end, or change something about it, I can easily. I save my layout as a .psd (with layers intact) on my EHD, and save a .jpeg for printing/posting layouts.

I do use "merge visable" before I save it as a jpeg.
