• How to Mash Up Templates in Photoshop and PSE

One of the most enjoyable parts of my job is having the opportunity to connect with so many of you. I always like hearing from you and getting the chance to help you as you work through hiccups in your digital journey.
This request came from Bertha who asked for a step-by-step tutorial on how to "mash up" templates. You may have seen the Template Mashup Challenge on the Designer Digitals blog and wondered what it was all about. In short, mashing templates is just creatively combining parts of two or more templates to put together a new page.

Here's how to get started mashing templates.

Begin by opening two templates in Photoshop or Elements. For the sample, I chose Katie Pertiet's Joyous Holiday and Hello Santa layered templates.
(Note: for the challenge, the host will give instructions on which two templates we are mashing for the challenge.)

Next, choose File > New from the Menu bar. (PSE: File > New > Blank File.)
Create a new document that is 12x12-inches at a resolution of 300 pixels/inch.
Use RGB color mode at 8 bits and a white background. This will be your working document on which you'll create your page.

I find it easiest to have all three documents visible in my working window. To do that, choose Window > Arrange > Float all in Windows from the Menu bar. (PSE: Window > Images > Float all in Windows) Drag the new document to the side by clicking and dragging the title bar.

Press Ctrl Tab (Mac: Cmd Tab) to scroll through the three open documents as you work. This is a big help for me since I like to keep the two templates stacked on the left side of the editing window with the new blank document to the right. I can Ctrl Tab through the templates to make choices as I work.

Now you'll use your creativity to pick and choose parts of each of the templates to create your own imaginative design.

Find an item on one template you'd like to use on your mash up page.
Click on the template document to make it "active" and click on the item you want to use.

In the Layers panel on the bottom right corner, you'll see that the layer you chose is highlighted.
You can click and drag directly from the Layers panel onto your new blank document.
Hold the Shift key as you click/drag to keep the item in exactly the same position it was on the template.

Repeat this process to pick and choose items from each template you'd like to use on your new page.
You'll be using the templates like kits to put together a new and unique design.

To select more than one item at a time (like a frame with a photo placeholder and tape) just Ctrl click (Mac: Cmd click) all of the layers to select several at once. Click and drag the layers onto the working document all at once.

Finally, you can add papers and embellishments from other kits, photos and journaling to finish your page.

Save your page and share it in the Scrapbook Challenge Gallery. Don't forget when you use ALL DD product on your challenge page you should post a link of your page in the Challenge Participation thread so that it will count toward your savings in the rewards program. Everyone's a winner!
