If you just want to read reviews on equipment, I've been referred to B&H Photo by a number of people, including by a book on better digital photography. They're a store in NYC that's been around forever, and they aren't afraid to tell you if you need something cheaper. Since a lot of pros use it, the product reviews tend to be a lot more informative.
