The extension tubes with your 50mm require A LOT of light. The more light you have the easier focusing will be.

You have to get close to your subject and perhaps even consider manual focus. When I use them I literally find myself holding my breath. It is a bit of a workout to hold steady enough to get the shot and retain focus.

You can also try shooting with a tripod to get more steadiness.

Start with your smallest tube and then play with the longer one once you get the hang of it.

Also, if you have a longer lens, try with it. You'll find it much more forgiving.
