I am just getting some extension tubes tomorrow actually, so we can compare notes then.
What I do know, is that when you do macro, they also recommend manual focusing.
Also you kinda set your focus point and then move your body in and out until you are in focus.
I am not sure if that helps. I am not good at explaining.
