Hope you get it sorted out and working consistently again!
Does it have a little button thing along the upper edge near where it attaches to the body for manually setting an f number or choosing A for auto? My 50mm 1.4 has a little button there and if it isn't fully clicked to the A, it seems to do a similar thing.
