If you have a fairly neutral background to the photo and only need it a bit bigger, here's a trick I read about a while back to stretch the background. With the marquee tool selected, draw a rectangle around a portion of the background that could be 'stretched' (the full height of the photo). Then with the transform tool, pull the side of the selection out to stretch the background a bit. It gets distorted quickly, so it's hard to do if there's much detail in the background, but if the background is a sky or plain colored wall, etc, it works great.
