I struggled with this same issue, and I got the 28 - 135 mm f/3.5 - 5.6 IS USM. And I love it! The zoom is perfect for "walk around" and now what I do is normally use my 50 f/1.8 inside and this lens outside. The only thing that sort of bugs me (and I had read this before I bought) is that the lens does not lock so if you have it around your neck and are literally walking, then you have to hold the camera by the lens so it doesn't slide into zoom --- BUT it's a big enough lens that you would probably carry it this way anyway! So I don't really mind. =) It's been a fantastic lens for everything outside like zoos, playgrounds, amusements parks, etc. Great lens for an affordable price.
