Oh, how funny to see this! One of my two book clubs is meeting at my house Thursday night to discuss this book! It was sold out absolutely everywhere locally, and all the libraries in the county-wide system were checked out. I waited too long to order from Amazon and would have had to pay for overnight shipping, so I bought the audio CD version from Border's just the other day.
I did not like it to begin with-- mostly because the actress reading it whines a bit in her delivery. But as I got into it, I have really enjoyed it. I think mentally I have come to adjust for the actress/reader's annoying voice. The story is quite sweet and complex. Really interesting to learn about the Channel Islands, too!
Funny to me was that the first book the Literary Society claimed (to the soldiers) to read was "Elizabeth's German Garden." My mother gave me that book! -- a 1901 version-- a few years ago, just before she died. I had not read it, but pulled it out to read this week!
