Template Challenge: In Focus

Having a clear focal point in a layout is an established design principle. Most templates make that a snap. The talented designer has done the hard work already, and you get to play with pictures, paper, and embellishments to complete your page. Pattie Knox’s Speed Byte No. 157 has a clear focal point, and here’s how the Creative Team used it:

LT431405XOne of our new Creative Team members, Kim (KimR+) used the focal space to create subway art describing ten things for which she’s thankful. I love the mix of fonts, alphas, and colors that lead the viewer’s eye to that adorable photo of her daughters. Her neutral background is the perfect canvas for her design. Brilliant page, Kim!

I adore the photos Jess (jesshunt) used on her page. Look how much fun three dollars buys at the Target Dollar Spot! She paired her focal photo with smaller shots and dressed the whole page in a patriotic red, white, and blue color scheme. If her page doesn’t scream, “Summer,” I don’t know what does.

On Easter, my daughter-in-law got this great shot of my grandson, so I thought Pattie’s template would be the perfect showcase for it. I flipped the template horizontally so that Sam was looking into the page and then drew my color scheme and accents from his shirt. I love the argyle pattern on his shirt, so I had fun finding paper and brushes to repeat that pattern.
