Saturday Scraplift: Grounding a Photo

I have to confess to being partial to the page we’re lifting this week. It was designed by my daughter-in-law Karen (oswegograd) and features my handsome grandson. Beyond those merits, however, lie a strong design and great use of color and embellishments. The dark blue paper provides a dramatic background for the elements that ground the photo. Then Karen layered patterned paper and a mixture of accents to highlight her picture, and I really like the combination of shapes and textures she chose. The members of the Creative Team had a lot of fun lifting Karen’s page.

Janet (JALong) is a master at using bright colors to tell her story and to bring her page to life. She’s done just that on this page about the friendship bracelets her daughter made for members of the family. I love the unique focal photo supported by the smaller shot and Janet’s brilliant use of colorful layers to provide a background for her pictures.

Mollie (readstoomuch) chose a winning color scheme for her page about her grandsons enjoying a Coke float in an old-fashioned drugstore setting. I love how the patterned paper piece echoes the striped awning in her photo, and the pops of gold and blue are the perfect touch. The slight angle of Mollie’s design gives her page a great whimsical feel.

For my layout of the photo of my sons and me on Mother’s Day, I drew the colors from our clothes and chose a tone-on-tone striped paper to use behind the picture. Even though clustering isn’t second nature to me, I enjoyed finding elements with different shapes and textures to highlight my photo. Another technique I really like is using part of an overlay on the edge of my page as I did with Katie’s Arrowed Overlays No. 01.
