My Year | My Story Heritage Scrapbook Album

Last year I lost a dear friend and creative team member here at DesignerDigitals after a courageous battle with cancer. Before she passed away she told me she was glad for the scrapbooks she’d made for her grandchildren but she regretted not having made an album all about her own life. She thought she had plenty of time to get to that. For months after her passing, I tossed around ideas on how to approach a book about my own life to honor her memory. Then in July, I suffered sudden cardiac arrest and was shocked back to life, twice. My own mortality became very real and this project gained importance on my to-do list. And now I’ve committed to making this My Year to tell My Story and I invite you to join in and tell your story too.

Each month I’ll have a new pack of templates, prompts and other assorted add-ons to help you tell your story.

No two stories are the same. We all will have similar framework but how our stories have unfolded will be different for each of us. Through the year we will cover our origins, families, upbringing, schools, jobs, life changing experiences, love and the raising of our own families. Will bring in some pages to help us tell the stories of our views on various topics, favorite things, friends, firsts and more. Then the plan is to move on to a heritage album for the story of those that came before us for next year! So I encourage you to use these templates as a framework to get your project started and add in bits and pieces that help to tell your own unique story.

My STory Heritage AAM template scrapbook album

The unifying elements of this album with be the background color, simple format with typed word strips and the timelines down each side. I felt it was very important to give this project a sense of time so each page has timelines with editable text paths and a marker that you can slide up and down as needed. And I encourage you to include scans of ephemera from your own life. Think birth certificates, diplomas, tickets [the good and the bad ;)] and other things you’ve hung on to with meaning in your life.

Each month you can join in and share the pages you’ve created and link your pages on the participation threads for each month and that will help towards a savings code to continue your scrapbooking projects!

So Katie. When I did my heritage album, I did something similar but slightly different bend. I’ve debated getting the templates because of that. I guess what I am wondering is this project going to be much more and end up being an all about me album through our whole life up to now and would it be worth sort of redoing my baby photos and those of my parents and grandparents as a prelude to the continuation of what is coming the rest of the year?

Hi Shannon! So, this project is going to be an all about me album, with your life so far including schools, life lessons, jobs, loves, lessons, hardships, triumphs etc and then we will go into the ‘prequel album’ with stories/memories about parents, grandparents and further generations back and that will likely go thru next year! Hope that helps!

It does. Thanks. I will probably do it then. Yikes. Three albums this year with my usual yearly album, project life and all about me. Should be fun though.
